What is the actual difference between a tuxedo and a suit?

At first glance they can look similar, but there are a few things that set a tuxedo apart. Tuxedos have satin lapels, satin-covered buttons, and a satin stripe running down the outside of the pant leg. They are traditionally paired with a formal dress shirt, a bow tie, and either a vest or cummerbund. That combination is what gives a tuxedo its formal, polished look.

A suit does not have the satin detailing. It gives you more flexibility with your shirt and tie choices and tends to read as slightly less formal. That is not a bad thing at all. It just means a suit fits better in certain settings.

When should the groom wear a tuxedo?
